Diets & Allergies

If your child has special dietary needs, changes can be made to your child’s school breakfast and/or lunch at no extra charge, with the proper documentation signed by a licensed physician. If your child has special dietary needs, please use this form:

Student safety is our highest priority. We want to provide clarity on food labeling and outline the official district procedure for managing severe food allergies.

Understanding “May Contain…” Labels

You may notice that many food products now have precautionary labels like “may contain nuts” or “processed in a facility with nuts.”

  • This Labeling is Voluntary: Federal law only requires manufacturers to list allergens that are intentional ingredients. These precautionary statements are voluntary and are not regulated by the FDA.
  • An Industry-Wide Practice: To limit liability, manufacturers are now using these labels on a vast number of products. This is a nationwide trend affecting the entire food supply chain, including many standard K-12 products that have been served for years.

Our Official Process for Managing Severe Food Allergies

To ensure we have accurate, physician-verified information to protect your child, LISD has a formal and essential process.

  • Complete the Special Dietary Needs Form: This is our most critical safety tool. The form must be completed and signed by a licensed physician.
Special Dietary Needs Request Form – English
Special Dietary Needs Request Form – Spanish

Once the Special Dietary Form is completed by your physician, please submit it directly to the Kitchen manager in the Child Nutrition Services (CNS) department. Submission instructions are listed at the bottom of the form.

  • Your Child’s Account is Flagged: Our system will then alert cashiers, preventing the sale of restricted items to your child.

This official process is the only way to guarantee that our cafeteria team is aware of and can accommodate a life-threatening food allergy.

Charge Policy

Leander ISD understands situations may arise that prevent students from having available funds to purchase a meal. Because of this, the district allows a grace period so that students can continue to enjoy a hot meal until funds are deposited. This grace period is the equivalent of the cost of five lunch meals, or $15 for elementary students and $16 for middle and high school students. Once a student hits this limit, they will be offered a fully reimbursable meal, and no trays will be taken away. Students and Parents / Legal Guardians are responsible for any negative balances accrued and will receive letters emailed from our online system and/or printed from the school district. Phone calls to the number on the student’s account may also take place to rectify the account by our Nutrition Services office, campus cafeteria managers, or campus guidance counselors to rectify the account.

No a la carte items will be allowed to be charged to a student’s account if their account is in the negative. However, if a student has cash-in-hand and wishes to purchase an a la carte item and has a current negative balance, they will be allowed to purchase that item. All efforts will be made throughout the year to rectify any student accounts with a negative balance. Individual campuses may add to this effort with their own rules or collection attempts.

If there is a financial need, please consider applying for the free or reduced-price meal program by visiting My School Bucks, downloading a paper application under Forms and Applications below, or picking up a paper application at any campus or the Child Nutrition Services office.
