Leander ISD has evolved our long-standing work-based experience (formerly known as COOL Week) to single-day job shadowing opportunities we call COOL Days. COOL = Career Opportunities On Location, which are opportunities for high school juniors and seniors to engage with potential career pathways. COOL Days seek to EXPLORE, CONNECT, and INSPIRE.
Why is it so great?
One of the crown jewels of the LISD Advanced Academics & Pathways programming, COOL Days provide LISD students the opportunity to explore a career or industry in which they have an interest. College is an expensive place to find out what you want to be when you grow up! COOL Days allow students to “try on” careers before entering post-secondary education and training. The goal is for students to become aware of the skills, education, and training required for a specific career path as well as network with industry professionals.
For Business Partners
COOL Days are single-day job shadowing experiences that allow business partners to mentor students, provide insight and exposure to real work environments, and assist students in making connections between their learning and careers. Hosting students for COOL Days not only impacts students’ career planning and future goals, but is a fabulous way for business partners to identify future talent, establish fulfilling community partnerships, and enhance employee engagement and morale.
For Students
What is a COOL Day?
Students are allowed two days during their junior year and two days during their senior year to miss school for career investigation, which we call COOL Days. A COOL Day is an opportunity for students to visit a professional at the professional’s workplace to determine the student’s interest in pursuing a career in that field.
