Superintendent's Column

We are deeply saddened by the events that took place last week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. We are mourning with the nation over the tragic loss of innocent lives, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the victims, their families and friends.

Such terrible acts of violence remind us of the importance of reviewing our practices and policies to ensure student safety. Know that your child’s safety is our top priority at all times. LISD campuses regularly practice drills for numerous situations so that staff are prepared to lead our students to safety during a real emergency.

LISD partners with multiple law enforcement agencies to support all schools and has in place threat assessment protocols that are activated anytime a threat is reported. We encourage families and students to share any information about a threat of harm to self or others via our anonymous alert system or by notifying a school staff member, principal or counselor. The more information LISD is given, the quicker and more thorough the investigation.

As superintendent of LISD, I go to work each day believing that it is a blessing for us to be able to teach your child. Our top priority is always the safety and security of our students, and we are committed to continuing every effort to ensure your child is safe while he or she is in our care.

My heart breaks for those impacted by this horrible tragedy. There are no words to express our grief. Please remember the Parkland community in your thoughts and prayers.
