Great People Shape Leander ISD

It has been a pleasure for me to have met so many incredible people during my first few weeks in Leander ISD.

My campus visits have been wonderful opportunities to meet with principals. While on our campuses, in every classroom it is evident to me that our principals have created positive school climates and cultures. They work hard to put student learning at the forefront of all of their decisions. I love seeing how our principals make it a priority to get to know their students; how they make time to speak to every student they see in the hallways; how they engage with students in their learning activities.

Our teachers demonstrate the same level of commitment as our principals do. I have seen how district teachers at every level are committed to challenging students and nurturing higher-level thinking skills. For example, while visiting the LISD middle schools last week, I was thrilled to see students in our Gateway classes working on project-based learning activities that involved helicopters and convection ovens. It is clear to me that our teachers are knowledgeable of their subject matter and care deeply about our students’ learning and understanding. Like their campus principals, our teachers know it is all about the kids. They make the time to get to know their students personally.

It has also been a joy for me to meet so many talented students on my campus tours. I am so impressed by how much they know about their schools and programs. I enjoyed students showing me around their schools and talking about the wonderful things their classmates were doing, and I was struck that students have so much pride in the successes of their peers. This shared sense of accomplishment has created a strong sense of community within our schools. You do not find this everywhere, and it is one of the things that makes LISD so unique and special.

I have had the opportunity to meet several community leaders who have demonstrated strong support for our schools, including local elected officials, representatives from about 30 faith-based organizations, and the Leadership Leander ISD Class of 2017. I have also been in contact with the offices of our State representatives. As I attend school and community events, I look forward to meeting more engaged community members.

I met many other wonderful people at the dedication of Glenn High School, Saturday, September 17. It was wonderful seeing Mr. Tom Glenn, whom I’ve been acquainted with for a number of years, and his family and meeting so many Glenn HS students, parents, staff members, community members and former LISD employees. It was wonderful to see the community come together to honor all that Mr. Glenn did for LISD during his 28-year tenure and tour this beautiful campus. The dedication was a celebration of the people who make up that wonderful school community – its namesake Tom Glenn, Principal Arturo Lomeli, Glenn HS students, staff members, parents and others. It was a great day!

We are blessed to be a part of a district where principals, teachers, students, parents and community members join our commitment to lead all students to a bright future.
