The process for adjusting attendance zones for schools in the 2020-21 school year hit another milestone with the Board selecting Scenario D to be presented at two community meetings on April 8 and April 10. Feedback collected from these meetings, along with feedback captured online through Let’s Talk, will be presented to the Board at the upcoming April 18 Board meeting.

With Danielson Middle School, located across from Glenn High School, to open in 2020, LISD has been discussing adjustments to the attendance zones since January 2019 with a deadline of late May for announcing the changes.

The latest zoning scenario continues to focus on keeping student groups together from middle to high school, while keeping larger groups of fifth-grade students together as they transition from elementary to middle school. The scenario moving forward to public comment, Scenario D, includes moving all students in the Rutledge Elementary attendance boundary from Stiles to Henry middle schools. This causes HMS to expand to 1,500 students but keeps more students together from elementary to middle and middle to high schools.

“Acting on community priorities continues to be our focus during this process,” Trustee Gloria Gonzales-Dholakia said. “Scenario D addresses many of the topics we’ve been urged to consider, and I look forward to hearing more from our stakeholders at the community forums next week.”

At the request of the board, LISD collected feedback on middle school zoning Scenario A, from the Feb. 21 Board meeting. At the March 7 meeting, district staff submitted Scenario B, which incorporated additional community and board feedback. Administration opened the discussion on April 4 with Scenario C, leading to the next iteration for public comment.

SCENARIO D

  • Provides relief for Leander and Stiles middle schools.
  • Moves Wiley MS students zoned for Glenn High School to Danielson MS
  • Stiles MS considerations:
    • Uses Ronald Reagan Boulevard (north of RR 1431) as a natural barrier – NBCDs east of this barrier would remain at Stiles MS and those west would be rezoned to Wiley MS.
  • Wiley MS considerations:
    • NBCD 1625 rezoned to Wiley MS and Rouse HS to align middle school to high school feeder pattern.
  • Henry MS considerations:
    • The Rutledge Elementary zone (NBCDs 1710, 1825, 1830, 1845, 1860) rezoned to Henry MS to maintain elementary to middle school feeder pattern.
  • Cedar Park MS considerations:
    • NBCDs 2075, 2200 and 2225 rezoned to Cedar Park MS to align middle school to high school feeder pattern.
    • NBCDs 2000 and 2010 rezoned to Cedar Park MS and Cedar Park HS for Henry MS relief and to continue an aligned middle school to high school feeder pattern.
  • Running Brushy MS considerations:
    • NBCD 4770 rezoned to Leander MS for Running Brushy MS relief.
    • NBCDs 3100, 3200, 3300, 3400, 9955 remain at Running Brushy MS and are rezoned to Leander HS to align middle school to high school feeder pattern without overcrowding Cedar Park MS.
  • Cedar Park HS projected enrollment decreases while Leander HS projected enrollment increases.

WHAT’S NEXT

The district is on pace to approve 2020–21 attendance zoning changes in May 2019. Leander ISD will hold two public forums (6:30 p.m. April 8 at the Running Brushy Middle School cafeteria and 6:30 p.m. April 10 at the Henry Middle School cafeteria) to collect community feedback about Scenario D. The district is also capturing feedback online through Let’s Talk.

The administration will consider feedback and could make adjustments again prior to the April 18 Board of Trustees meeting. The Board will then discuss the proposal on May 2 before considering action on May 16. No changes will go into effect until the 2020–21 school year.
