Literacy Partners

“These volunteers are an absolute blessing! As someone whose child will be benefiting from these volunteers, I can't begin to thank you enough! What a blessing and answer to a specific prayer that [my son] gets some extra help. Please let these volunteers know how much they mean to this family in particular! So
very grateful!”

What is Literacy Partners?
Literacy Partners is a partnership with our faith-based community, pairing students and volunteers together to practice reading and engage in conversations about the books being read.

The purpose of the Literacy Partners initiative is to facilitate the goal that every child is reading on grade level by third grade. Literacy Partners serve with consistency and humility while keeping it simple. The program includes two 15 minute one-on-one reading sessions right outside the classroom door.

History of Literacy Partners
In 2008, an inter-faith ministries group in the greater Austin area committed to spend more of their efforts on decreasing the student dropout rate. After a great deal of research, the coalition identified one common, root problem: children are four times more likely to drop out of school if they’re not reading on level by third grade.

What started as a pilot at one school has now grown to include over 800 volunteers from multiple organizations, serving in schools across the Greater Austin Area.

Consider investing 30 minutes a week to make an impact in the life of a child.

How Can I Get Involved?

1. Register with Leander ISD as a volunteer (all returning and new literacy partners and mentors must register with LISD every year).
