If you have been absent from public schools, you may not have seen the transformation of modern classrooms. Leander ISD learning spaces have shifted from rows of seated students to engaging layouts and floor plans.

When I walk campuses, I see elementary students spilling into the hallways for individual learning with teachers and instructional specialists; I see content area experts and teaching aides working with students on reading, while a teacher works with a small group to take a different approach to the lesson; Further down the hall, a volunteer sits at a table, reading to a child. Throughout LISD, students are engaging in hands-on, transformative learning.

  • I recently judged a “Shark Tank”-inspired entrepreneurial competition at Reagan Elementary School, where students pitched business ideas to a panel. These industry experts evaluated students for their strategic thinking, presentation skills and research.

  • Students from River Ridge Elementary School sent me pictures of the new 3-point line in their gym. The group approached me last year with the idea, at which time I challenged the students to research the project and invite me back for a presentation explaining the need and the best way to complete the project.

  • I visited a robotics competition at Vista Ridge High School and saw an incredible amount of strategy, design and teamwork go into the event. Leander ISD is blessed to have state champion and nationally-recognized robotics teams thanks to our talented teachers, passionate parents and dedicated students. Last year, the Vista Ridge RoboRaiders squeaked by the Vandegrift ViperBots to finish as the UIL state champions, with VHS finishing second.

Make a New Year's resolution to see the transformation in our public school systems by visiting a school. While test data drives the state’s accountability system, our focus is on creating opportunities for all our students to learn in the most impactful way possible. If we can come together as one community, with one purpose, for #1LISD, I know 2018 will be an excellent year for Leander ISD families, teachers and staff.
