The Leander ISD Board of Trustees approved a policy update to the low-cost meal adjustment to ensure families get more communication and more leniency when exceeding the charge limit on negative school meal accounts.

“We know that every student learns better when their basic needs are met,” Board President Aaron Johnson said. “This policy change reflects our ongoing district-wide commitment to student well-being and our efforts to ensure timely communication with families.”

Under the new guidelines for students and families using the program, the district will contact families earlier when their Meal Time accounts get low and work together on an action plan for negative balances based on the number of meals as opposed to a dollar amount.

“Leander ISD schools work to ensure every student has a meal,” Board Secretary Trish Bode said. “I am proud to serve on a Board that took action in updating policy to ensure our schools continue to care for all students and families.

The new policy changes will go into effect November 2018.

“I am so pleased the Board continues to put the needs of our students and families first,” Superintendent Dan Troxell, Ph.D., said. “We know how valuable these partnerships are, so this policy update reflects that commitment.”
