Leander ISD campuses have received numerous reports of smoke throughout the district. The safety of our students is always our top priority. At this time, LISD has not received notification from any area fire departments of fires that pose a risk to our schools. LISD is working closely with emergency officials to assess the situation. Should the situation change, the district will act based upon the direction of the emergency responders.
Due to how wide spread the fires throughout Central Texas during the last several days have been, there is currently a large amount of smoke and debris in the air. Some campuses may be seeing the smoke from a fire in Burnet, as an example. All emergency responders are on full alert in our entire area. Each campus principal has been directed to utilize professional judgment when determining whether students should be engaged in outdoor physical activities. This will vary from campus to campus.
LISD trains and practices with local officials on a regular basis in the event that an emergency situation occurs. LISD campuses have action plans in place based on the recommendations of emergency officials.
The following is an updated communication from Troy Kimmel, Chief Meteorologist at KEYE CBS42 TV: " The smoke from the fires in and around the Austin Metro Area will continue overnight and through much of the day Thursday. Smoke concentrations will be greatest after midnight and prior to noon on Thursday…Significant improvement is expected Thursday afternoon with northerly winds and good atmospheric mixing."
