The Leander ISD Board of Trustees voted to name its two newest campuses, Middle School #8, scheduled to open next August, and Elementary #24, set to open for the fall of 2013, at the Thursday, Feb. 16 Board Meeting.
The Board named the new middle school, located at 3250 Barley Rd. in Leander, Florence W. Stiles Middle School after retired teacher and longtime Leander resident Florence Wallace Stiles. Stiles, who graduated from LISD in 1945 as salutatorian and then went on to earn her teaching degree from the University of Texas, taught second grade at Faubion Elementary for 19 years. A dedicated educator and active member of the community, Stiles has also made numerous contributions to the City of Leander, such as being a founding member of the Leander Public Library Board and charter member of the original Leander Chamber of Commerce.
The new elementary, located at 1515 Little Elm Trail in Cedar Park, was named Officer Leonard A. Reed Elementary after Cedar Park Police Officer Leonard Reed who was killed while on duty in 2010. Reed, a Gulf War veteran, served as a school resource officer at Vista Ridge High School and was widely known as a positive role model and mentor to young people. He was a respected member of both the law enforcement and Cedar Park community and was admired for having a passion for helping others.
The Board’s vote comes after reviewing more than 80 names that were submitted for the two schools. The district invited community members to submit names online and were asked provided information on how their nominee contributed to education and the LISD community. Three forums were held to vet potential names.
