Soldiers from Camp Mabry landed a Black Hawk helicopter at Wiley Middle School on November 13th in support of the school’s AVID program. This program works with students who want additional help to achieve a college education. One of the objectives of this course is to provide opportunities for college-educated professionals from various occupations to speak with students.

Because of the military’s generosity, Wiley students were able to view the Black Hawk and meet the soldiers. AVID students were also able to benefit from their stories related to college and career choices. This AVID-sponsored event concluded our campus-wide celebration of Veteran’s Day.

This year’s guest speaker series has included representatives from the fields of law enforcement, international business, veterinary medicine, and the music industry. Each presenter used his or her personal experiences to reinforce the importance of setting goals, exploring college and career opportunities, and overcoming obstacles.
