Foreign Language / Languages Other Than English

The Leander ISD Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Department promotes the study of languages, the study of both modern and ancient cultures, and communication for today’s multilingual, multiethnic, and multiracial world. We provide students with a solid foundation, in concurrence with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Languages, necessary to help them become effective citizens in today’s global society.
Why Languages Other Than English (LOTE) are Important
  • LOTE help to have a meaningful conversation
  • LOTE help to enjoy travel
  • LOTE help to enrich employment opportunities
  • LOTE help to appreciate and learn how people live and interact in other cultures
  • LOTE help to meet other people through language clubs and organizations.
  • LOTE help students understand English better and perform better in English class.
  • LOTE participation also improves math and science performance.
  • There is a positive correlation between the study of a LOTE and higher SAT scores. College Entrance Examination Board reported that students who averaged 4 or more years of foreign language study scored higher on the verbal section of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) than those who had studied 4 or more years in any other subject area. In addition, the average mathematics score for individuals who had taken 4 or more years of foreign language study was identical to the average score of those who had studied 4 years of mathematics. These findings are consistent with College Board profiles for previous years. This holds true for the ACT also.
