Cox Elementary School

Cox Elementary School

Opened in the fall of 2001, Leander ISD's 10th elementary school — Charlotte Cox Elementary School — is named after Charlotte Ann Cox, who taught for more than 24 years in LISD, mostly in the fifth and sixth grades. She taught at Faubion Elementary, the Giddens Sixth Grade Center, and at both Leander and Cedar Park middle schools.

Cox lost her battle with cancer in 1999. She is remembered by her students and colleagues as "the consummate teacher," someone who cared deeply for a generation of students, and a teacher who constantly went "above and beyond" to help other teachers become better educators.

Spotlight5 Questions with
Principal Sheri Hawthorn

Q: What's something about yourself that would surprise your students/staff?

A: I'm not certain what would surprise them. Most know I am very adventurous and already know a lot about me. I suppose my most recent adventure that surprises people is I obtained by motorcycle license and have my own motorcycle.

Q: What do you like to do for fun?

A: I enjoy being outside, exercising, I love water sports, and music. I can play almost every instrument.

Q: What was your favorite subject in school?

A: That's tough. I suppose my favorite academic subject was math, and of course, I loved athletics and band. I was in both.

Q: What is your campus' biggest strength?

A: I would say the community, including the teachers. We have wonderful community support and the best parents any school could possibly have. I also believe that our teachers and staff are some of the most dedicated individuals I have ever worked with. They are 100-percent committed to the students and will do whatever it takes to support each child in every possible way.

Q: Why are you here?

A: Working in LISD is special. I love working here because of how we treat people. Everyone matters. Professionally speaking, working with communities and children is my life. I will continue to grow and learn and move forward in my career. The best I can hope for is to make a positive difference in others' lives.
