Opened in the fall of 2003, Leander ISD's 12th elementary school of the district's current era - Knowles Elementary School - is named after former LISD teacher and school board member Patricia Faye Knowles, a 22-year teacher and nine-year member of the LISD Board of Trustees.

During Knowles time in LISD, the district could be described as a small, rural school district. Certainly, the 96,600-square-foot elementary campus named after her is a giant leap forward from the six-classroom Leander School where Knowles once taught LISD students.

5 Questions with
Principal Lara Labbe-Maginel

Q: What's something about yourself that would surprise your students/staff?

A: I'm not sure if they will find it surprising, but I love to travel and learn about different cultures. Between my junior and senior year in high school, I had the opportunity to be an exchange student in Australia.

Q: What do you like to do for fun?

A: I grew up in a really large family. I am the oldest of four children. We love to play games and be really silly. As a parent, I have instilled that same love of games in my children. We have a ton of card games and board games and enjoy hanging out and playing them. The rest of my time is spent watching my children in their many sports and activities.

Q: What was your favorite subject in school?

A: Math was my all-time favorite subject. I was the only girl on my middle school math team. We would compete against other schools in completing challenging math problems.

Q: What is your campus' biggest strength?

A: The heart of the campus is our biggest strength. The staff here at Knowles loves the students, the community and each other. We truly are a family.

Q: Why are you here?

A: I am here because being an educator isn't a job; it is a blessing. Every day I get to come to work and help others become a better version of themselves, than they were yesterday. Whether it is reading a book with a child or conferencing with a child about their writing or listening as a child explains how to solve a math problem, I am here to help each child be passionate about learning and willing to take risks. I am here to partner with parents in finding ways to support their child. I am here to support teachers in their classrooms and as they learn new ways to reach children. Being a part of the Knowles community is a blessing, and my goal is to help children discover their potential and find ways to reach their goals and beyond.
